“The Almagest” is the title of a new silver issue of the Republic of Fiji. This quite extraordinary oval-shaped coin pays tribute to the famous astronomical manual created by Ptolemy and serving as the basic guide for Islamic and European astronomers until the beginning of the 17th century. The 2012 Apocalypse coin has been presented with the extremely limited mintage quantity of only 1 000 pieces worldwide, so don’t miss your chance to become the owner of this wonderful Fiji issue.

   Featured on the obverse of this coin, there is the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. There are also the inscriptions indicating the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, the name of the issuing country and the issuing year. The upper part of the coin contains a stunning two-sided glass insert featuring Ptolemy’s planetary model.

   The reverse design of the oval-shaped Apocalypse coin impresses with the detailed image of Ptolemy being guided by the muse Astronomy, and contains the same glass insert as the obverse does showing the Earth at the center of the cosmos. Considered the most influential scientific texts of all time, the Almagest was also valuable to students of mathematics because it documents the ancient Greek mathematician Hipparchus's work, which, unfortunately, has been lost.
