Two Handwritten Genealogical Manuscripts or Diaries Relating to the Rockefeller and Shaurman Families, and Others, 1880s, New York.
One manuscript book is titled "Isaac Shaurman and his Descendants" on the front cover.
The other is inscribed "Miss Amanda Rockefeller, Glenco Hills, Columbia County, New York, October 14th, 1887."
It appears that both books are in the same handwriting, I think that of Miss Amanda Rockefeller.
For the purposes of this listing, I will refer to the books as the Rockefeller MS and the Shaurman MS.
The Rockefeller MS is 360 pages, entirely filled with Miss Rockefeller's handwriting, written "from both ends."  The first 167 pages appear to be a diary of family events, dated 1887 to 1890:  day-to-day accounts of visitors and events, with many names and details mentioned.  The remaining pages are written back-to-front (pages 360-168), and also appear to be a diary, dated 1887 to 1890.  I don't know why these diaries are separated into two parts.
The Shaurman MS is approximately one-third filled.  It begins with a "Biographical Review of Columbia County, 1894."  It begins with these words:
"Miss Amanda Louise Rockefeller and Miss Catherine Rockefeller, Mrs Catherine Rockefeller wife of Russel Warren Miller.
Ladies highly respected, reside with their Mother, Mrs Jane Elizabeth Shaurman, Widow of James William Rockefeller, of Glencoe Hills in the Town of Livingston, Columbia County New York..."  It continues to describe the families of Rockefeller and Shaurman in this county, with details of births, and deaths, etc. and an account of houses owned in Staten Island, Tower Hall, Port Richmond, and Glencoe.
The remaining pages of this book seem to be primarily genealogical records of the families, with many pages left blank, presumably to allow room for further additions.
These two manuscript books would be well worth further study and research.
