A CHARTLES DICKENS FIRST EDITION : The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Chapman and Hall, London 1839. First edition, 2nd??? issue. Octavo, [7],ppviii-xvi, 624pp. Portrait frontispiece + 39 plates as called for. Lacks the half title leaf but otherwise complete. Few plates slight scattered spots. Contemporary binding of half calf, rubbed, the spine with flat raised gil bands, black lettering piece. Upper joints with closed cracks at top and bottom of upper board but the board is well attached. Edges sl worn. Overall a Good solid copy of an early issue of the first edition. "Visitor" and "Sister" are spelt correctly. Plate at p45 contains publisher's imprint, as does the frontispiece. There are some early issue points : The frontispiece is not listed in the illustrations list; page x has "wil" for "will", p245 line 10 has "flys" for "flies", and p618 lines 23-24 have Grogzwig spelt incorrectly.
