I've chronicled my obsess..., er hobbies in my blog:
http://therobbcollections.blogspot.com/
The page always opens with the latest entry.
Older pages show a lot of
other equipment and stuff.
Examine the photographs closely to see all the features of this gorgeous, big and heavy (34 pounds) piece of audio excellence! Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono input choices for analog lovers, like me! Note the XLR inputs and the button marked “Extended Direct Drive”? I'm not sure what they mean by that, BUT the sound from those inputs is amazing! Note also, each channel has four, count 'em, four power transistors. Most newer amps use one, yes, just one. Huge heat sink for them to keep their cool. Note the oxygen-free copper power transformer and those large capacitors. This is NO average integrated amplifier, no sir (or madam)!

The Robb Collections: Rare in the US: Vintage Technics SU-VX800 200 watt Integrated Stereo Amplifier
An incredible find, this superb and extremely rare, (especially in the U.S.) audiophile component.
It's
an integrated amp that I have never seen before. Made by Technics®, a
company that is once again building very nice equipment to get back
into the high-end audio market it once did so well in. Model number
is SU-VX800. A big and heavy beast with lots of features, inputs and
controls. My ORION
AUDIO BLUE BOOK states that is was
made in 1991 and 1992. It states the watts-per-channel at 125. Also
refers to it as a "MILITARY" UNIT. It retailed for $320
when new. On the front it has "Class AA". Supposedly Class
A is the highest quality of sound. So this must exceed that. And does
it ever!
Not quite black in color with perhaps a slight green tint. I have greatly enjoyed it.*
This link will take you to HiFi Engine's page about it:

Channel separation: 50dB (line)
Output: 150mV (line)
Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16Ω
Dimensions: 430 x 158 x 429mm
Weight: 17kg
Year: 1991
Price: GBP £450 (1991)
Note the price unit above? All the units I found for sale on eBay and other sites are NOT in the United States. So how this baby ended up here, I suspect someone in our military posted overseas bought it through their post exchange and brought it home with them. That happened a lot during the Viet Nam war.
It was missing one foot and there was some scratchiness in the controls. Upon opening it up, I found an area on the main (mother?) board that looked overheated. However, I have tested everything, so I suspect whatever overheated was replaced/repaired in the past. I thoroughly cleaned the interior and exterior. Cleaned all the controls with Dylek II® contact cleaner and lubed with DetoxIT®. I also cleaned all electrical contacts (inputs, outputs, AC and speaker terminals, too. Contact-wise, it's as clean as new.
I
discovered that those turquoise blue ribbon things that run from the front to a board on the right side are in fact
actuator cables from the selector knobs on the front. So, the one on
the left (in the photo) is attached to the phono selector knob, the one in the center is to
the “to be recorded” knob and the one on the right is source
selector. The volume control is sealed so could not be cleaned. But then, it was not causing any noise or other issues.
ALL minor problems are gone and it works perfectly!
The
sound? SUPERB! *I
truly want to keep it, so you better grab it before I change my mind!
Oh, I'm selling, separately, a SHURE vintage phono preamplifier AND XLR to RCA adapters. Note that it has C9 AC input. I used an adapter (shown in the last two photos) for aftermarket audiophile power cable. I used my Pangea® AC-14 power cable. Quite an improvement over the stock, skinny power cord.
