Description of Contents.  Over the years there have been a number of clubs who adopted the title ‘Mansfield Town’.  Indeed, as early as 1870 there was a club of that name playing its home games on a local cricket ground, in colours of scarlet and black.  The present Mansfield Town club, though, can trace its origins to June 1910, when Mansfield Wesley FC changed its name ‘as the club is no longer associated with the chapel or school’.  Thus, previous claims that the present Mansfield Town FC was a professional outfit and a limited company in 1905 can be discounted after Stan Searl’s painstaking research into the club’s history.  The result of those years of delving through dusty record books and crumbling newspapers is Mansfield Town: A Complete Record 1910-1990, the most exhaustive work ever published on the Stags.  The author takes us from those early days when Mansfield played in the Central Alliance, to their election to the Third Division South in 1931.  Thereafter, Town switched between the Southern and Northern sections, from Third to Fourth Divisions, and eventually enjoyed a short spell in Division Two. There has been the occasional good Cup run and, of course, the Stags’ crowing moment of glory when they won the Freight/Rover Trophy at Wembley in 1987.  All these events are covered, as are the great names of Mansfield Town’s history – great goalscorers like Ted Harston and Harry Johnson and long-serving stars like Sandy Pate.  The book’s statistical section, giving dates, results, scorers, line-ups and attendances for every Stags’ game in League and Cup football is a remarkable piece of research and there is a history of the club and its grounds, illustrated biographies of 100 star players and every manager.  Profusely illustrated, including many rarely-seen photographs, this work will delight Mansfield Town supporters everywhere and is an important addition to football’s ever-growing library of comprehensive club histories.
