The home of prolific gold discoveries in the second half of the nineteenth century, Australia remains one of the largest producers of the world’s favourite precious metal. Recognising the importance of gold in Australian history, the fourth release from our Treasures of Australia locket coin series encapsulates beads of gold.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. Weight, metal quality, legends ELIZABETH II and AUSTRALIA, denomination and the year of issue are also present there.
The coin’s reverse design portrays an abstract interpretation of Australia’s stark and beautiful landscape. The design surrounds a transparent half-circle locket containing three granules of gold weighing a minimum of 0.50g. The inscription "Treasures of Australia" is engraved at the bottom of the reverse side.
