1853-1866 Shu or Isshu Gin Silver Bar Coins

Tempo Era Samurai Coins

From 1192 to 1867 the Shogun governed Japan.  These were military commanders appointed by the emperors.  The term Shogunate refers to the feudal military dictatorships of the Shogun.  The Tokugawa period which is also referred to as the Edo period (1603-1867) was a time of political stability.  Society was divided into four classes; warriors or Samurai, farmers, artisans and merchants. Mobility between classes was forbidden.

These hammered coins from this period were undated.  The Shu or Isshu Gin coins such as the one offered here were minted in Japan from 1853 until 1865 under different Shoguns or Samurai leaders.

The coin is original and there are no large marks or scratches and it has never been abused or used in jewelry.  It is small at approximately 2 cm x 1 cm. The price is $29 including free shipping.
