Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland. Hodder & Stoughton for Boots: the Boots Edition. 1928. Illustrated by Gwenydd Hudson. First Edition thus, first printing. Blue cloth boards with blind-stamped design to front and gilt to front and spine. 12 mounted colored plates on coated paper with tissue guard to each. Numerous orange and black illustrations and headpieces throughout. 4to.

This is the first state of the Hudson illustrated Alice published by Hodder for Boots the Chemists. First published in 1922 by Hodder in maroon boards, there was also a limited deluxe edition published by Hodder in 1922 with cream boards. That printing was signed by Hudson, limited to 250 copies, and priced at 42 shillings. The next printing was issued in 1923: under Hodder's "New Golden Series of Colour Books" (at 7/6- net), the Hudson Alice was re-issued in yellow cloth boards. The sheets appear to be the same. A subsequent smaller edition was issued in 1927: housed in blue cloth boards, it was lacked any gilt or images stamped to the boards and its size was smaller (8vo). In 1928 Hodder issued the famous Boots edition, with its blue boards stamped in gilt like the first printing. The Boots edition -- among others -- is very often wrongly identified as the first printing by Hodder. The first state of the Boots edition edition carried with it the original mistake evident in the true first printing: Carroll's name was mis-spelled on the title page. That was not corrected until the second state of the Boots edition. This copy is an example of the first state.

Blue cloth with excellent color. Gilt bright and attractive.  Externals near fine. Very attractive.

No previous owner's marks.  Binding solid. Light scattered age spotting to prelims and randomly to text block margin. Text block clean and handsome.  All plates present with descriptive tissue guards.

All books have images that show many of their characteristics and a description is provided that lists faults and virtues and general characteristics. Feel free to ask questions. Images and descriptions help, but there is nothing to replace seeing a book in person. I try not to miss any major blemishes, but if I do, you have my apologies. And a full refund.
