Blackmer 247; Penzer p.85-8. Burton was Consul at Damascus from 1865-1871. During that period Drake went to Syria as a representative of the Palestine Exploration Fund, but for some reason he left the Fund, and he and Burton continued the exploration of Syria and Lebanon on their own. This work is not a continuous narrative of their travels but consists of articles by Burton, Drake, Mrs Burton and others. The plates include shells, plants, and Burton's collection of anthropological materials from the Holy Land (skulls etc.) The text contains catalogues of these materials.

22 x 14 cm. Volume 1, x + 360 pp + folding map (copy) + 10 folding plates. Volume 2, vii + 400 pp + 7 pages of inscriptions + plates. [Very difficult to collate (See Penzer)]

A good binding or reading set. Ex-library in library binding, both volumes are stamped on both sides of the title page, most of the preliminary pages of volume one have a blind stamp to top edges, no other stamps apparent. A few page edges have neat archival tape repairs. Rear board of Vol 1 detached and backstrip very degraded.
No foxing or inscriptions, binding sound, all plates present, (all plates are not listed in the list of illustrations but all that are are correct). Map appears to be a copy. Any questions please ask. Well worth a rebind.

UK buyers due to Royal Mail's price structure it is sometimes cheaper to split orders over 2kg into 2 separate packages and occasionally these may arrive on different days even though posted at the same time.
