Such pieces are uncommon in western collections, as they typically had a somewhat robust and active use-life, and few have survived.The construction of these pieces is formidable. The skin was seasoned, stretched and dried before being reinforced with struts and accessorised with handles and carrying straps made of raffia and other plant materials. This particular example bears a good age patina and is a fine example of this type of Shield. One stitched repair, evidence of its long and active life in warfare, a couple of breaks in the hide, but beautiful patina and overall appearance.This is a compelling piece of African cultural history dating from the late 19th century.Approx 75cm diameter.
