The Ford GT-40 Roadster, or Spyder as it was referred to by some, is the newest derivation of the fabulous Ford GT. This roadster version made its first public appearance in April of 1965 at the Le Mans trials. It seems that the drivers at the Le Mans have a strong preference for open cars. This roadster closely resembles the coupe with the exception of the open top and the relocation of the engine scoops. The Ford GT-40 Roadster is a rear-engined prototype with an ultra-low profile. The chassis of the semi-monocoupe construction is fabricated of light steel sheeting. The aerodynamically designed body panels are constructed of fiberglass reinforced plastic. The all independent suspension is said to be the finest high-speed setup in the world. The Ford 289 cubic inch V8 engine inhales through what has proved to be the ultimate in carburation, four dual-throat Webers. Exhaling is done through a sophisticated tuned exhaust system resembling a bundle of snakes terminating into large diameter tapered pipes. This engine setup in its ultimate state of tune produces a whopping 385 b.h.p. at 7200 r.p.m. Although this high bred machine weighs in at something close to 2200 pounds in keeping with the prototype regulations, it is still capable of exceeding 200 m.p.h. on high speed circuits such as Le Mans. |
