When
Canon began production of their second generation of Ring Type USM
lenses, they started
with three
that have become classics with well deserved reputations.
One of the three is the offered EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM in this
auction. Rounding out the trio are the EF 35-135mm
f/4.0-5.6 USM and the EF 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM.
As
in other classic EF lenses of this era, Canon engineered
durability with this
model’s superior heavy duty STAINLESS STEEL METAL LENS MOUNT, convenience by their inclusion of a real distance
scale window and affordability by designing it to accept 58mm
filters and
accessories. Unlike some of its
successors in the mid grade EF line up, it boasts the superior Ultrasonic “Ring
Type” Motor, allowing fast, accurate and virtually silent focusing. There is no comparison between this design
and the cheap “Micro Motor” USM variations.
Canon
viewed this medium to long telephoto model as its “Super Telephoto” lens. Weighing in at a mere 19 ounces with a compact size from 4.8 inches
to 6.8 inches when at maximum zoom, this is a lens you will not tire of when
walking around outdoors using its distance grabbing capabilities. Given its wide 3:1 zoom
range, it allows you
to tackle many photo opportunities, whether concerts, sports, wildlife or
outdoor activities with family or friends.
You can take advantage of these diverse situations with a zoom lens that
has an excellent maximum aperture of f/4.5.
This
comfortable, compact super telephoto USM lens still remains in the extensive
Canon EF auto focus lens lineup.
Optically and mechanically it easily outperforms the more popular middle
grade Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM. As a
result samples of this lens offered in the condition available here have become
increasingly RARE.

free and operate in the critical “snappy” manner.

front and rear glass is clear.

No
haze or fog is visible in this lens.

As
in most used zoom lenses, some dust may be noticed inside the lens. It will not create problems for your
photographs taken with this lens.
OPERATION:
·
Zooming
functions smoothly & quickly throughout the entire focal length. You can be taking a tight portrait at 100mm
and instantly zoom out to 300mm to photograph action across the field.
·
“Zoom
Drift” is present in this lens. The
action of this zoom still feels smooth.
·
Auto
focus operates quickly and accurately.
·
The
AF/M switch functions properly.
·
The
manual focus ring functions correctly from 58.5 inches to infinity.
COSMETIC:
·
The
focusing ring, zoom ring, AF/M switch and hand grip surfaces are very
clean. THERE EXIST NO
CRACKS IN THIS LENS!
·
All
lettering and numbers on the lens barrel are perfect and completely legible. One exception is the letter C in Canon has
some scratches over it and over the name Canon.
·
Its
distance scale window is clear as well as all the markings on the scale.
· Overall this lens, which has a few stray
nicks/scratches, is in near MINT CONDITION!!
COSMETICALLY, ELECTRONICALLY, MECHANICALLY
AND OPTICALLY, THIS LENS REPRESENTS A RARE FIND!
This Canon model has a further
operational advantage of allowing Full
Time Manual (FTM) focusing, meaning that even while using the
benefits of its auto focus system you can make fine adjustments manually. You thus achieve superior control of your
depth-of-field for how your want to emphasize your subjects.
With the use of internal focusing this
lens keeps its compact size. Even when
zooming, a movement that takes only a quarter turn of the large, easily gripped
zoom ring, the barrel will only extend an additional 2 inches. As importantly, the front element does not rotate, allowing for ease of use of special effects
filters such as polarizers.
Given the wide zoom range of this
versatile lens, plus its reasonable maximum aperture in a lightweight, compact
unit, it should come as no surprise that photographers “on the go” will often
take this lens first or often alone. Along
with the fact that many “L” lens features are present in this model, it’s easy
to see how the EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM super telephoto zoom has still remained
in the Canon lens catalog for 20 years.
Be
advised that when mounted on a Canon Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XSi, XS, T1i, T2i,
T3i, T3, T4i, SL1, T5, T5i, 7D, 300D, 70D, 60D, 50D, 40D, 30D, 20D or 10D, this
Field Of View (FOV) is equivalent
to a 160-480mm “Super Zoom” lens. That's due to the 1.6 X "crop factor" magnification. This
provides you with a compact telephoto to super long telephoto lens, the ideal range for a vast majority of outdoor
action photo opportunities for your Canon EOS Digital SLR.
