This is a really interesting and unusual highway map. It is a 1940 general highway map of Menominee County map section 1 of 2 in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Menominee county was divided into two sections. It was created by the Michigan State Highway Department. The data on the map was gathered from a highway planning survey with help from the Federal Works Agency, Public Roads Adminstration.
The map contains lots of really unusual information that is normally not found on a highway map. I think this map was not the finished product because I found a rubber stamped note that reads "STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL The Michigan State Highway Department requests you to treat this information strictly confidential", on another similar map for a different county. I think this map was done at the same time for the same purpose.
This map measures about 18" by 24 1/2". The legend on this map shows many features like: roads, road system designation, airways, railroads, highway bridges, dams, cities and villages, waterways. There is a huge list of marked cultural and local features listed like: mines, power plants, tourists camps, pipe lines, the grange halls, post offices and many more. The scale for this map is 2 inches for 3 miles.
