Here on offer is a stunning vintage Indonesian Ramayana wayang golek hand carved and painted rod puppet.
Wayang golek are wooden doll
puppets that are operated from below by rods connected to the hands and running
up through the body to the head. The simple construction allows a surprising
range of expressiveness, movement and versatility. Little is known of the exact
history of wayang golek, but it is believed that it originated in China,
arriving in Java in the 17th century. Traditionally wayang golek is
used for telling stories of Muhammed and the Muslim traditions and values,
going on to tell Hindu epic stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabarata.
This imposing puppet is from the
Hindu tradition, it is well made with some fine detailing. There is a strong
range of colours employed and the elaborately costume has period fabric and
beading embellishments. The face is quite fearsome with the
headdress being heavily detailed. The painting is in good condition for its age
with some minor chips and he has a bruised nose. One of the rods controlling the
hands has been broken. The central rod has been fitted into
a wooden base, this is easily removed. The puppet displays well.
The puppet is being offered in good
vintage condition, it measures about 67cm tall.
A great decorative collectable and a
wonderful conversation piece.
