An extremely fine, well struck, centred and toned ancient Roman silver denarius minted under Emperor Antoninus Pius, at the Rome mint, circa 148 - 149 AD. The obverse with the bust of Emperor Antoninus, shown facing right and wearing laurel wreath. The legend reading: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PM TRP XII "Antoninus Pious Augustus, Chief Priest, Twelve times Tribune of the People" The reverse with Aequitas standing holding scales and cornucopia. The legend reading: COS IIII "Four times Consul" Antoninus Pius was the fourth of the so called, 'five good Emperors'. He is remembered as a mild mannered and capable ruler, who lead the Empire through a period of prosperity and peace. He died a natural death and was quickly deified by the senate.
