REVUE
ANTIQUE
SWISS WRISTWATCH
The subject of this review is
an interesting collectible specimen of
the men’s timepiece ‘REVUE’ rich in Swiss heritage and tradition. The
watches under this trade mark always differed by style and fidelity to the best
traditions of watch affair.
This admirable timepiece
features a white ORIGINAL porcelain enamel dial. Despite more than 80-year-old age, the dial
appears in almost excellent condition! The original open face features a 60
minute outer track border with 13-24 hour numbering, well readable black Arabic
numerals, original blue steel hands style and a slightly sunken sub-second’s
dial. The dial is signed ‘REVUE'.
The case of this remarkable
timepiece is unusual; it has double
staining. Lateral parts of the front and back cover have pinkish color.
This is a Silver watch with a set of antique silver
hallmarks. The inside of the case lids is stamped 0.800. There is also Swiss
(Wood Grouse) and German (Crescent Moon/Crown) silver hallmarks, which are
used in conjunction with a maker's mark and a decimal silver standard mark.
This admirable watch has a four-piece, double hinged case. The
existence of an inner dust cover lid is a good sign of a quality watch. It was
used to protect the mechanism from dust and debris and to provide an extra
layer of protection from shock or moisture. The back lid has engraved beautifully and has a free
wonderful spot for the monogram.
The original movement of this mechanical watch with genuine jewels is
in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this
watch. The original movement has a logo
of company and is signed ‘REVUE, G.T. (Gédéon Thommen)’.
This watch is called a “Transitional" Era Watch. It was
converted from pocket to wristwatch.
This was quite common at the beginning of XX century, as it became
“fashionable” for men to wear wristwatches.
Diameter
watch without the crown: 51 mm
Thickness
watch: 14 mm
The timepiece is in working condition, well hold time. But this watch is very old; it is a lot of years, therefore it requires careful handling and care. This Swiss watch is certainly extremely collectable specimen!
History: After the
construction of the Basel-Olten railway line in the 1850s, the little Jura town
of Waldenburg,
situated on the Basel-Geneva trade route, was forced to fight the unemployment
and poverty in its population. In 1853, the borough decided to introduce the
watch and clock making industry and founded the "Société d' Horlogerie à
Waldenburg" (Waldenburg clock and watch making company). But the
enterprise didn't flourish until it was privatised and taken over by the young
merchant Gédéon Thommen in 1859. The company, managed under the name of
"Gédéon Thommen - Watch Makers", originally gave its watches the
brand mark "G.T.".
After
Gédéon Thommen's death, his son Alphonse founded the company "Thommens
Uhrenfabriken AG" in 1905. The REVUE watches produced with their own
production machines according to modern methods met with general approval among
experts.
In
the 1980s, the company's management decided to rename the watch brand
"REVUE THOMMEN". The Revue
Thommen “Cricket” wristwatch almost attained cult status. Several American
presidents, including Truman, Eisenhower
or Johnson, wore these watches.
Now
Revue Thommen is owned by Grovana, Inc.
