Antique Rosewood Box

This is a very fine box, in excellent condition. It is large and quite heavy. The box is complete with its bottles and containers.

The wood of the box is rosewood and it has a mother of pearl escutcheon.  Inside it is lined with red velvet. There are six cut glass crystal containers. Four have metal lift off lids, the other two have ground glass stoppers. There are a selection of travel items. A bone button hook and another hook, a large metal bobbin needle and a travel dip pen in a case. The velvet on the inside of the lid unfastens to reveal a pocket to store letters.

The tray can be lifted out, which exposes a further storage space. There is also a secret drawer in the base. Lift the small metal clasp and the sprung drawer pops out.

The whole box measures 30.5 cm, 12 inches across, 22.5cm from front to back, and 18cm, 7 inches high.

I consider it to be in very good condition. There are some bumps to the wood corners, no cracks in the wooden exterior and the hinges are firm and fully functioning.  The key is missing.

A beautiful antique box, just as useful today as it was over 150 years ago.
