Antique Redware Crock or Apple Butter Pot
By John Bell Paint Decorated Exterior

For your Antique Redware Collection

Details

  • Description: A beautiful antique crock or apple butter pot made by John Bell of Waynesboro Pennsylvania. This large pot has sides curved gently out and rising to a shaped rim. It has a plain round and flat base. The inside of the pot is glazed with a dark brown glaze while the exterior is unglazed. The exterior is decorated with partially faded floral and foliate colored designs. It is not clear to us that the decoration is original to the piece or were added at a later date. This is due to the fact that in over 25 years of dealing and collecting redware we have never seen a piece that is decorated in such fashion. Be that as it may, the piece is still beautiful. The piece is stamped with the maker's mark on the outside under the rim. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Uncertain but John Bell was active as a potter in the period 1833 through the 1870s.

  • Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was made in Waynesboro Pennsylvania.

  • Size: The pot measures ~4 1/2" in diameter at the base, ~6" in diameter at the top and is ~6 3/4" nhigh. The crock weighs over 2 pounds and 6 ounces.

  • Maker: John Bell.

  • Marks: Stamped with what we believe should read "J. Bell Waynesboro Pa" near the rim but some of the letters are not clear and some are missing. We can see a W. the word BELL and the letters for Pa but we are unable to decipher the rest. Please see last photo for details.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique redware kitchen item worthy of a spot in your collection.

  • Condition: The pot is in great condition given its age and utilitarian function. The interior has residue of white coloring suggesting that the piece may have been used as a flower pot and had water in it. The colored design on the exterior is faded and is difficult to see. It is less obvious than what the photos suggest. The piece has no cracks, breaks, or hairlines. It has one small chip on the bottom of the shaped rime (see fourth photo). Other than that the piece is in great shape and looks wonderful. Please see photos for addition condition information.
