Der weltweite Abbau stellt nicht einmal ein Zehntel der Menge von Gold bereit. Im Vergleich zu Gold muss für eine Feinunze die 3-4 fache Menge an Erz gefördert werden, es gibt 10 mal mehr Goldmienen als Platinlagerstätten und die Kosten der anschließenden Gewinnung des Rohplatins sind um ein vielfaches höher als bei Gold. Für eine Unze Bergplatin (31,1 g) müssen 10 Tonnen Erz gebrochen werden. Die Eigenschaften von Platin machen es in vielen Bereichen praktisch unersetzlich. Dies macht Platin zu einer sicheren Kapitalanlage - mehr noch, in einigen Jahrzehnten scheint Platinschmuck zu einer absoluten Exklusivität zu werden. Platin vs. Weißgold

Der überwiegende Teil von Diamantschmuck wird aus weißen Edelmetallen hergestellt. Jedoch werden nur ca. 5% aller Diamant Schmuckstücke in Platin hergestellt und 95% in Weissgold. Aber warum ist das so, wenn doch Platin in allen Belangen einen erheblichen Mehrwert und Vorteil bietet. Weissgold ist nach unserer Überzeugung ein schlechter Kompromiss. Denn Weisgold ist eine Goldlegierung die durch Beimischung von hellen Metallen hauptsächlich Platinnebenmetallen entfärbt wird und daher einen beige / gräulichen Farbton besitzt. Entwickelt wurde diese Legierung um 1912 als kostengünstiger Platinersatz. Um diesen gräulichen Farbton wieder an den hellen Platinfarbton anzupassen, werden die Schmuckstücke rhodiniert - mit hellem Rhodium überzogen, was von Zeit zu Zeit erneuert werden muss. Der Hauptgrund weshalb die Schmuckindustrie Weissgold bevorzugt verwendet ist der Arbeitsaufwand. Bei der Herstellung von Schmuck aus Platin sind hohe handwerkliche Fähigkeiten notwendig, die bei der Weissgoldverarbeitung häufig durch Maschinen und industrielle Fertigung ersetzt werden. Platin ist aufgrund der besonderen Eigenschaften schwerer zu bearbeiten aber auch deutlich hochwertiger und von beständiger Schönheit.
