vintage 4" INCENSE BURNER Manchu Chinaman figure ASIAN ART queue hair JAPAN

Kneeling figure of a Chinese man dressed in yellow robes is an incense burner. Made of ceramic the figure is hollow with an opening in the back for the insertion of incense. Chinaman holds an orange lantern that has openings in the lid through which the smoke and scent escapes. Figure is painted in yellow, orange, green and black glaze colors.

The queue braided hair style became the dominant look among Chinese men during the rule of China's last Imperial Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912) when the Manchu people of Northeast China dominated the Han.

Stamp mark in red-orange; "JAPAN".

4 1/4" tall.

No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. There is an mold line on the figure's forehead. There are two flecks of missing black paint on the base (see photos). Ash mark on the inside of figure from use.
