It has three gold subsidiary dials, one for the continuous seconds & two for recording the chronograph, & it is clearly signed L.L. Bean Hamilton Chronograph Swiss.

This watch has white military style hands with yellow lume for showing the time & black hands for recording the chronograph. All hands are original to this watch.

MOVEMENT:

This watch has a beautifully finished Swiss Valjoux calibre 7750 Automatic Self-Winding Chronograph Movement. It has 17 Jewels, 28,800VPH, quick set day-date & hacking feature for exact time synchronisation.

When the caliber 7750 was released in 1974, it was the reserve of the high end watch & slightly modified variations of this base calibre can be found in watches made by Rolex, Breitling, Longines, Omega, Minerva ect. Then gradually it was being fitted into the best watches from other less known brands.

This movement has allways had a good reputation as a very functional, reliable calibre & with the revival of the mechanical wristwatch, it prompted ETA to buy the manufacturing rights of this movement.

VALJOUX / ETA CALIBER 7750:

The Valjoux / ETA caliber 7750 uses an automatic-winding module attached to the top of the movement, winding in one direction by means of a single double-click wheel. Initially using 17 jewels, current versions run in 25 jewels & 27 jewels, it has been supplied in both 21'600 & 28'800 beat versions. The 7750 is 13.25 ligne (30 millimeter) design, 7.9 millimeters thick.

Like many contemporary chronographs, the Valjoux 7750 dispenses with the traditional column wheel for switching functions. Instead a heart piece (limiter) is used to coordinate starting, stopping, braking, & reset functions, usually by means of two buttons in contemporary designs (the earliest coulisse-lever calibers used three buttons). The Valjoux 7750 also utilizes a concept first patented in 1941 by a watchmaker, Henri Jacot-Guyot. This is a reset-to-zero (or heart piece) lever which pivots to reassure accurate reset-to-zero of both the center hand & minute counter. Previous coulisse lever designs had not been as precise in this regard.
While the parts count of a coulisse-lever design is comparable to that of a column wheel design, the various levers & springs in the lever design require much less precision in form & materials and are much less expensive to manufacture.

This movement has been fully inspected by one of our technicians, it has also been electronically timed & regulated, subsequently it now keeps chronometer time to within a +5 to -5 seconds per day with the chronograph module functioning correctly.

BOXES:

This watch comes housed in a Genuine Hamilton box set, it is not the original box for this watch, but it does its job of keeping this lovely watch safe & sound, & it remains in excellent order!!!

SUMMARY:

This is a stunning "High Grade" gents field chronograph wristwatch from one of the worlds most underated watchmakers. This was a expensive watch when new & it remains in a excellent all round condition. These watches do not come up for sale that often, especially in the UK.

L.L. Bean are a hunting & fishing store located in Freeport, Maine, USA. When the US military ended their contract with The Hamilton Watch Company in the mid 1980s, Hamilton were forced to find new outlets for their millitary grade field watches, or end the line completely. They came up with the idea of selling their field watches through various hunting & fishing outlets, & L.L. Bean were one of the companies to take up this offer. As far as i am aware, L.L. Bean were the only company to offer this top of the line field chronograph model.

HAMILTON WATCH COMPANY HISTORY:

Hamilton Watch Company was not the original name of the company, it started off as the Adams & Perry Watch Manufacturing Company On Sept.26,1874.

The first movement was produced on April 7, 1876, based on a model made by E.F.Bowman, the movement had a snap on dial & a patented stem-setting arrangement. It was a large watch movement & no more than 1,000 were made before they introduced a more standard size movement.

The name of the company was later changed to the Lancaster Watch Company in 1877. The watches produced here were for the lower end of the market. The watches had a one-piece top 3/4 plate & a pillar plate that was fully ruby-jewelled (4 -1/2 pairs). It had a gilt or nickel movement & a new stem-wind device designed by Mosely & Todd.

In 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company name was introduced. When the Hamilton Watch Co. was first formed, it was planned that it would be called the Columbian Watch Co., but someone had a copyright on the name. One early model was to be called the "Hamilton" model, so the company was named Hamilton instead. In 1893 the first watch was produced with the Hamilton label. The watches became very popular with railroad men & by 1923 some 53 percent of Hamilton's production were railroad watches, & partly due to the railroad connection, the quality of Hamilton watches increased dramatically.

In 1936, Hamilton introduced the grade 917, an open-faced stem-wind, stem-set movement. As of 1948, approximately 156,000 had been produced. This movement was often used in their "Keystone" trademarked watches. The Elinvar hairspring was patented in 1931 & used in all movements thereafter. On October 15, 1940, Hamilton introduced the 992B which were fitted with the Elinvar hairspring.

In 1966 Hamilton purchased the Buren Watch Co. & Under Hamilton's control they exploited the 1954 Buren patent micro-rotor automatic movement. This was a major achievement as the smaller rotor meant that it could be sunk flush with the watch movement, so making automatic watches a lot slimmer. Soon after, the first self winding Chronograph using the mini-rotor was introduced.

Hamilton, who was well known in the US for their "Railroad Watches" marketed Buren watches under their own name, one example is the Hamilton 971 which was a Buren watch. Hamilton also continued to market Buren watches under the Buren name until they again went back into Swiss hands in 1971. In this year SIHH, who owned Omega & Tissot purchased the Hamilton watch Co.

Although the Hamilton Watch Company is still in business today making modern type watches, they last produced American made watches in 1969. The company remained in business in a small way as a distributor of imported watch & clock movements, cased in imported & domestic watch & clock cases, then sold as Hamiltons. To the best of our knowledge, the Hamilton company never did much in quartz timepieces until after the company was bought by the SWATCH GROUP in the mid-1980s.
