For your consideration we are offering for sale this vintage walking stick / cane that was made by W.A. Hutchison in 1938 from an Elm Tree on the Gettsburg, PA Battlefield. The cane has been placed inside a paper sleeve for the last 70+ years and the condition is excellent. The cane measures approximately 36" inches in length with a subtle taper. W.A. Hutchison documented all his canes on the paper sleeve. I have approximately 30 additional canes that I am listing over the days/weeks where all came from the W.A. Hutchison estate and all are from the late 1920s to 1940s. The history written about this cane on the paper sleeve reads the following, "ELM from Gettysburg, PA Battlefield. This wood cut by W.A. Hutchison July 3, 1938, in presence of William Black and J.C. Andre, Tarentum, PA. It grew on Oak Hill near the Peace Monument dedicated by President Roosevelt, July 3, 1938. The 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, PA, will be the last reunion of the boys of the blue and gray. Almost 2000 Civil War Veterans, all aged from 88 to over 100 years were guest of the Government. For further details of Anniversary and Battlefield see newspaper clippings and pictures.
