The design on the obverse, which shows the Miraculous Mary, also known as Our Lady of Grace, comes from an apparition of the Virgin Mary that appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in Paris in 1830. It shows the Virgin Mary with radiant light emanating from her outstretched hands and surrounded by the text: “Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee" in French.
The reverse, departing from the typical design, shows the Guardian Angel surrounded by the text: "O Holy Guardian Angel, Be My Guide" in French.
The Miraculous Medal reminds the faithful of Mary’s devotion and promise to the world and it conveys special graces upon the wearer. Paired with the Guardian Angel, this medal confers extraordinary protective powers. The medal was likely given as a baptismal gift.
