Ouray Ute Indian Chief Vintage Unused Williamson Haffner 1908 Color Postcard

Description

Wonderful vintage color postcard with a stunning color portrait of a solemn looking Ouray - Ute Indian Chief- in traditional dress.

Copyright 1908 Williamson Haffner Co, Denver.

Chief Ouray was born in 1833 during the Leonid Meteor Showers (thus his name), and died in 1880. The US government recognized Ouray as Chief of the Utes after he, as a member of the Uncompahgre Band, testified in Washington DC on behalf of his people in pursuit of a treaty.

Ouray's first wife died young, soon after giving birth to Ouray's son Queashegut. Although Ouray remarried, Queashegut was his only child. Ouray's son was kidnapped at the age of 5 by Sioux Warriors, and although Ouray devoted much of the rest of his life to searching for his son (and despite the US government's bringing a 17 year old boy who had been abducted and raised by the Sioux to meet with Ouray in hope of reuniting father and son), was never successful in recovering his lost boy.

The postcard was not mailed and is unused. From a collection of similar pieces from the very early part of the 1900s.

There is a bit of corner and edge wear but overall this is in very nice condition for a postcard which is over 100 years old.

Please carefully review photos for more information on this interesting piece.
