TRACKS:  Jealousy (Bomb single), She’s Got It (Bomp single), If She Cries (Bomp single), Love Of The Loved (Bomp single), Sad Sad Love (Sundragon Sessions), She’s So Bad (live at CBGB’s), I’ll Be Loving You (live at CBGB’s), I Need Your Love (live at CBGB’s), Sad Sad Love (demo), Jealousy (first studio demo), Since I Fell For You (first studio demo), If She Cries (first studio demo), Tender Love (first studio demo), Anything Wrong (live at Cozy Corner), Stay Awhile (live at Cozy Corner), Bad To You Good To Me (live at Cozy Corner), Apache (live at Cozy Corner), and Woman (live at Club 82). DESCRIPTION:  While piecing together some notes on this anthology I stumbled across this review that says it well (kudos for mentioning both Uruguay’s Los Shakers and Poland’s Czerwone Gitary as reference points to the far reaching influence of Beatles style pop); as it appears on hyperbolium d.t com:  “Amid the skinny ties, safety pins and DIY ethos of late-70s punk rock, a few brave souls stood in contrast with well-crafted pop and tunefully sung harmonies. Among them, the Poppees most visibly swathed their sleeves with Beatles influences. Well, “influences,” is probably an understatement. Though they weren’t a Beatles tribute band, per se, “homage” is a more accurate description of the group’s sound. Like the bands sprung directly from the Beatles’ wake (e.g., Uruguay’s Los Shakers, Poland’s Czerwone Gitary and New Jersey’s Knickerbockers), the Poppees didn’t so much take a cue from the Beatles as they took whole pages of music, along with the Fab Four’s fashions and haircuts. The Poppees actually got their start in 1974, a year before the downtown New York City scene exploded with new music. Their first single, If She Cries, was produced by Bomp head-honcho Greg Shaw in 1975, and opens tellingly with the same guitar strum with which the Beatles led their cover of Do You Want to Know a Secret. The flipside, helmed by soon-to-be-Ramones-producer Craig Leon, was a cover of Lennon and McCartney’s Love of the Loved (The Beatles never officially released a version of it allowing Cilla Black the honor of recording it for the A-side of her first single) that features the winsome qualities of Gary Lewis & The Playboys. In short order the group was playing CBGB and Max’s Kansas City alongside punk and new wave bands who would soon become icons. The following Spring the Poppees cut their second – and last – single, the original Jealousy, backed with a cover of Little Richard’s She’s Got It. Produced by Cyril Jordan (Flamin Groovies), the single is even hotter than the debut. Only a few months after their second single was released, the band split, sending lead guitarist Arthur Alexander to start the Sorrows (soon to be joined by drummer Jett Harris), and bassist Paddy Lorenzo and rhythm guitarist Bob Waxman to start the Boyfriends. Bomp’s CD fleshes out the band’s two singles (which, on their own, are worth the price of the disc) with demos, live performances and an unreleased studio track. The extras are often as good as the original singles, highlighted by the Harrison-esque volume pedal of Sad Sad Love, the flaming hot (and crisply recorded) CBGB live cut She’s So Bad, a harmony call-and-response take on Dusty Springfield’s Stay Awhile, and demos of If She Cries and Jealousy whose charms may be even greater than that of the finished singles. Unlike fake Beatles bands (such as the Buggs, Liverpools, and Beatle Buddies) whose budget labels sought to fool unsuspecting buyers, the Poppees celebrated the Beatles with their original echo of the Merseybeat sound. There are Rutles-like moments of “spot the Beatles,” such as the All My Loving guitar figure in I’ll Be Loving You and the This Boy riffs in a cover of Since I Fell for You, but like those who earnestly rode the wave in the mid-60s, it’s affectionate and terrifically infectious. By the time they played Woman at Club 82, the group was moving towards a harder rock sound, having exhausted their exploration of Please Please Me and With the Beatles. But those early sounds are great to hear, and sound as fresh as they did in 1976 and/or 1963”.

See below under International Shipping for standard shipping rates and other details/terms of sale.

TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

Unless noted, all CDs come in standard jewel cases.

SS or SLD:  Still Sealed or Sealed. Short abbreviation that will appear in the title line of my listings. This item is new and unplayed. Also appears in the listing description as Sealed CD or Factory Sealed CD.

NEW CD:  This item is new and unplayed, but was received from a supplier without being shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped; more common on imports but also many of the smaller independent US labels do not seal their CDs; some have it both ways (for which I have no prior knowledge of or choice when placing my orders). Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up.

All CDs that do not come in an outer packaging wrap are inspected by me prior to shipping. It is not unusual to find small imperfections in the disc, especially on European manufactured CDs; these small imperfections do no effect the play of the disc. If, for any reason, a disc does not play it is fully guaranteed by me and is returnable for refund or replacement (see my return policy below for more details). Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear. If a jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping.

GFC or GF:  Gate fold cover, refers to a style of mini-jacket CDs.

S/T:  Self-Titled

2/1:  This denotes that 2 albums are on 1 single CD.

OOP:  Out Of Print.

MIX:  This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style.

MULTIPLE ITEM PURCHASERS:  My automatically generated invoices do not apply discounted shipping for multiple items purchased. If you choose to make full payment using the automatically generated invoice, standard individual shipping charges per item will be applied. I recommend that you wait until you receive my invoice with the proper discounted shipping total before making your payment. If you make your payment with full shipping charges I will attempt to issue a refund for your shipping discount, but Paypal does not always allow a partial refund (this will be done within 48 hours of receiving your payment, if not it is because Paypal will not allow a partial refund). If you have any questions please e-mail me.

*ALL CUSTOMERS*

HANDLING TIME:

Packages are usually shipped in less than 72 hours. NOTE:  This is not the same thing as delivery time, which begins once a package is turned over to the post office; averaging 3-7 business days for US delivery and 5 days to 3 weeks for international delivery (Italy seems to take even longer often times). International delivery is largely determined on how long it takes your local customs to process its mail. I will confirm receipt of payment and shipping date via my personal e-mail, adjust your filters accordingly. If you do not hear from me within the first three days after your payment, most likely my attempts to e-mail you have failed. Please keep me posted on your payment plans or any special requirements/needs of your purchase.

RETURN POLICY:

Please e-mail me with specific details and I will get back to you with your options. I ask that if there is a problem with the item that you contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense. Any refund, exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyers choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description.

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

US Customers:  Please wait at least two weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. Packages are not shipped with confirmation; this service is optional and available upon request at your expense, e-mail me before making payment so I can invoice you accordingly. It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.

MULTI-ITEM PURCHASERS:

Multi-bid winners/purchasers:  If you combine various formats such as LPs, 7" singles, and CDs, please wait for my eBay invoice for the shipping total before making payment. For example, US customers purchasing an LP with a 7” single and/or CD, as LPs ship via media mail, your package will ship as media mail. All international purchases are shipped via first class mail international so discounting will be determined by weight. Shipping discounts apply only to multi-item purchases that are paid for in one single payment and shipped in a single package.
