Prayer Bench. Islamic prayer board, Swat Valley, North West Pakistan or Afghanistan , circa 1850, adzed and carved Himalayan cedar, repeating carved border pattern, raised on two shaped planks, historic repair to top, 133 cm (52ins) high. Mainly used by women, the prayer boards of the Swat Valley are used in the same way as a sajjada or prayer mat. The abundance of timber in the region led to a strong tradition of wood-carving, the products of which can still be seen in Swat Valley homes.
