PHRA MAE THORANI (Thoranee). 'THE EARTH GODDESS.'
Phra Mae Thorani (Thoranee) is a very well-known as Thai Mother Earth, (The Earth Goddess). Phra Mae Thorani (Thoranee) most popular appearance is when she took form to help Buddha towards enlightenment. The legend has it that Buddha sat down under a Bodhi tree and vowed not to get up until attaining enlightenment. He was tempted by the Mara's (devil) army so badly that he almost failed. But he touched the ground and asked Mother Earth to be a witness for his good merits. From the ground, Mother Earth appeared and squeezed her hair braid. Water, representing the merits that Buddha had earned in the past, came out of her hair and drowned Mara's army. Thus, with the help of Mother Earth, Buddha 'overcame his demons.' After which, it is said, he attained enlightenment.
Thai farmers also believe that Mother Earth has the power to bring rain. Another of Mother Earth's powers is that of protection, which is bestowed in many ways. In ancient times before men went to war they would ask for protection from Mother Earth. And those who went to a forest to catch wild elephants were also known to invoke her protection from all dangers.
Phra Mae
Thorani (Thai: แม่ธรณี Pali: Dharaṇī) is a Thai and
Laotian Buddhist Goddess; Phra (พระ)
is a title or prefix word used with the name of a most revered person, place,
or object. She is recognized as the Goddess of the Earth. She is often shown
wringing the cool waters of detachment out of her hair. The water drowns the
forces of temptation sent by Mara to distract the Buddha as he meditated under
the Bodhi tree.
When the evil Mara sent his three daughters Trsna, Rati, and Raga (thirst, desire, and delight), to seduce the Buddha and then his army to stop Buddha from attaining enlightenment, the latter touched the ground (depicted as the 'calling the earth to witness' pose in statues) and Mae Thorani appeared. The water (representing the good merit accumulated by Buddha) she wrung from her hair caused a flood that drowned Mara's daughters and army.
A statue of Mae Thorani protecting Buddha will be found in every Thai and Lao temple, sometimes beside or in front of the main Buddha image on the altar, or outside. She is also called upon as a witness during the Kruat Nam Ceremony. (The water pouring ceremony). The Kruat Nam Ceremony is when people pour water into a container while chanting and then empty it onto the ground, to share the good merit they have made with someone who is not present. This could be a living person, though quite often they are doing it for dead ancestors. They do this by slowly pouring water over the index finger of either their right or left hand. At the same time, they have to think clearly of the person or persons they are passing the merit on to. They might also murmur something in Pali or Thai. The ceremony is also used during weddings, house blessings.

The Wat Suthat Temple Thailand, Bangkok.
The Wat Suthat Thep Wararam (or in short, Wat Suthat) is one of the most important Temples in Thailand. There is a huge and beautifully crafted Buddha image in the temple. This huge Buddha is larger and older than any other bronze cast Buddha image in Thailand. The base of this Buddha is 6.25 metres wide and is 8 metres tall! The Wat Suthat Temple is located at Bamrungmuang Road which is in the centre of Bangkok Metropolitan area. Wat Suthat was constructed in 1807 A.D. after the 27th anniversary of the founding of Bangkok by King Rama 1, the ruler of Ratanakosin. It took 40 years to complete 1807 to 1847.
The Wat Suthat Temple is famous all over the world for its Phra Kring, Medicine Buddha amulets. A Phra Kring is a small cast bronze Buddha image that has a sealed pellet inserted inside the Buddha which rattles when shaken. The Phra Kring, Medicine Buddha is a health amulet and it offers its magical power for health, healing, protection and business wellbeing for its owner. I am not sure but I believe the Kring Medicine Buddha was invented in the Wat Suthat.
Outside the Temple stand many Chinese pagodas, bronze horses, and figures of Chinese soldiers. The statues are said to have been shipped from China as ballast in rice boats during the reign of Rama I.
The Wat Suthat Temple is closely associated with Hinduism as well as Buddhism and there are Hindu Brahman priests who officiate at important state ceremonies. There are two Hindu shrines nearby. To the northwest across the street is the Deva Sathan, which contains images of Shiva and Ganesh, and to the East, the smaller Saan Jao Phitsanu is dedicated to Vishnu.
Consciousness is our essence. It is energy that creates everything in the universe.
To heal someone, you must first know why people suffer. If through healing them, you can show them how to stop suffering, you have fulfilled your role as a physician.
At the heart of all suffering there is a spiritual remedy that comes about from knowing the relationships between karma and suffering. Karma comes from the chaos that exists within all living creatures, all aspects of this world and the universe at large. Some chaos is good, some indifferent, some bad, but it is the stuff from which happiness and then enlightenment can be made.
For centuries many Buddhists have believed that by carrying a Blessed Ghau, Amulet with Buddha images, Luang Phor (Thai Buddhist Monks) or Gods you will be given good luck, and protection. Blessed ghau amulets will guard you from danger, will dispel evil and negative bad and dangerous energy, and protect you from disease. It is believed that blessed Buddhist amulets will help you to gain great wealth and will guard you and give you success while you are at home, at work, or traveling. Blessed ghau, amulets can be cast from metal or carved from a piece of wood, ivory, bone, or made from a special magical powder that contains hundreds of different special and secret ingredients that are then pressed into a mold and then baked. After this is done the amulets are blessed by monks in order to give the wearer the sacred spiritual power of protection.
Many or us are trying to find peace a small place where we can enjoy our lives. We look around and watch the world go by. All we wish to do is to find a small amount of peace and tranquility in the world today. There are huge amounts of negative and bad energy flowing. Many dark energies are around and trying to posess us. They try to find a host, when we are at a low point in our lives, when we are weak and vunerable.
