The Sangean ATS-909 is a perfect travel companion as it is compact enough to fit in a briefcase or a piece of carry-on luggage.  Since it uses AA batteries, the power can be universal even if you travel overseas as the batteries are easy to locate and replace.  This also makes it a great emergency radio as it is fairly thrifty on power.  The necessary AA batteries are easy to find and it also picks up amateur radio communications using sideband.  Because the radio also picks up the longwave band, listeners in Europe and the Middle East can tune in these programs as well.

The radio has general features that a new user to shortwave will find easy to use, but also includes some advanced features that serious listeners would appreciate.  There is also a flipstand on the rear of the radio to allow it to be used for bedside or tabletop use.  If you would like to read the reviews on Eham, you will see that this radio is a favored shortwave radio by most people:

We love listening to shortwave programming.  On any given day, we will likely to listen to 6 to 8 different countries broadcasting to residents here in the USA.  Americans tend to get their news and views from main media networks here in this country.  However, there is literally a world of news, current events, music, sports, arts and more available on shortwave.  On one evening recently travel in China on China Radio, a sports match from London on the BBC, music and a stamp collector's club from Cuba and Radio Havana Cuba, and cooking from Radio Romania International.  This programming was on while working on the computer and we rely on this information to help keep us informed of people and events outside our world here in rural Penna.  As parents with dependent children in our household, it is unlikely that we would be able to travel to these interesting areas anytime in the near future, but the radio helps bring a part of those cultures to us.

We have been listening to worldband radio for about 40 years and are happy to answer any questions you may have.  Over the years, we have owned over 100 different consumer and amateur radio receivers and have a good working knowledge of many companies so feel privileged to be able to assist with any questions you may have.
