Description

This is a rather rare covered butter dish or tub made by the Sovereign Potters of Hamilton, Ontario in the Westinghouse “Hercules” shape.  I believe that this particular butter dish was produced in 1940/41.  The Sovereign Potters began producing pottery, and specializing in vitrified ware, at the Hoepfner Refining Company factory (built in 1899 as a metal refiner) in 1933.  Their business was hugely expanded during WWII, due to the interruption of pottery exports from Europe, especially Germany.  This butter tub was also made in the US by Hall China, but import tariffs usually necessitated Canadians producing many of their own goods.  It’s interesting to note that Westinghouse Canada was also located in Hamilton, so it makes sense that this tub was produced by Sovereign and used in Westinghouse refrigerators.  The piece measures 4” by 6” and has a height of 3 1/2” - it weighs 1 lb and 15 oz.  It is in good condition -  I noticed a tiny interior edge impact on the bottom (see close-up photo) and a couple of small shallow chips on the interior edge of the bottom, but in the same color, so it should bother anyone too much as it is difficult to see (see last close-up photos).  The chip shows that the color appears to be yellow throughout the body of the piece.

This Canadian version is rare as the population of Canada has always been 1/10th that of the US, so fewer of any item were produced.  This yellow version, especially in such nice condition, is again, even harder to find.

This is a wonderful addition to a kitchenware or Canadian pottery collection - attractive form and color!

Shipping

Canadian buyers, please note that although we offer shipping through Champlain, NY for our American customers, we are a registered business located in Canada and must therefore charge applicable GST/HST/PST to Canadian buyers - please read further to understand our shipping methodology and note all costs so that there is no misunderstanding when rating shipping costs post-sale.

I ship to my US clients through USPS services as long as the value of the item does not exceed $200. For items that sell for over $200.00, I must ship to my U.S. clients using Canada Post. This is due to restrictions outlined in the North American Free Trade Agreement, chapter 3.21.  I am located in Canada but I have a carrier service to bring my parcels directly across the border on either Tuesday or Wednesday to be shipped out of the USPS postal outlet in Champlain, N.Y. In addition to the actual shipping cost, I do charge a $3.00 handling fee to help offset the cost of this special US service and new packaging for this piece. Please note that even with the handling fee that it is less expensive and is a quicker service than using Canada Post.

To my Canadian clients, I use Canada Post for shipping, as I am based in Canada - legally, I am not permitted to ship to you through the US, so do not rely on the US shipping calculator for costs.

To my International clients I can ship by either Canada Post or by USPS (in order to use USPS for intl. clients, the items must sell for under $200.00).

Please feel free to write with any inquiries in regards to cost of shipping to you.

Payment

Because I have a scheduled pick-up on either Tuesday or Wednesday, I would require your Paypal payment by Monday at 5:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

BUYER PAYS SHIPPING - PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL I CONTACT YOU AFTER THE AUCTION to avoid error. The reason for this is that package sizes and weights are estimates only as we cannot fully package items before they are sold. Please e-mail us for a shipping quote or wait until after the auction for a precise shipping cost. Our auctions end on Sunday evening, so I will be in touch with the correct invoice on Sunday evening or by the latest Monday morning, after we have had the chance to carefully package your item.

I would request any client to get in touch with me upon winning an item, who is not able to pay by Monday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, so I can get an idea of when to expect your payment.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: CANADIAN RESIDENTS PAY GST/HST and QUEBEC RESIDENTS PAY BOTH THE GST AND PST TAX.

Terms of Sale

Being auctions, we do not accept returns unless an item has been significantly not as described.  We describe very thoroughly, both with photos and text, but in the case that an item has been misrepresented, we will accept a return for full refund, including shipping costs.

International customers, please do not ask us to falsify customs documentation:

"Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up - do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts" - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior."
