Jacques Gautier (1924 - 2004) is often called "the Picasso of jewels" and is a real institution in France. During 50 years, he created pieces for Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne amongst others. He took interest in the technique of the ceramists, the Renaissance enamels and the Venetian glass makers. He then challenged himself to reinterpret these technical prowesses by adapting them to the trends of the contemporary fashion. In 1952 he opened his first workshop, rue de Richelieu in Paris. Reinterpreting the practices of the past in his own personal style, he mixed metal with ceramic, glass and enamel to create modern and contemporary art jewels. Translucency of the enamel, the inclusions in the glass, with the effect of the silvered backing all gave an inimitable resonance to his highly collectible jewels.
