This Hopi Sterling Silver overlaid watch band set came from an estate. It features an eagle/quail motif in traditional overlay in sterling silver with an added stainless steel twist-o-flex watch band. It also comes with a Quartz Timex cocktail watch which needs a new battery. The item was made during the 1990s in Shungopovi, AZ at the Hopicrafts Cooperative by David Mowa. The watch tips are hallmarked and stamped STERLING. There are small, unnoticeable signs of wear upon the edges of the sterling portions.

Hopi overlay silver smithing is a fairly new tradition being the result of both an archaeological restoration near Old Oraibi which revealed the spectrum of historic pottery designs and a post-WW2 Crafts Cooperative founding which gave returning Hopi GIs inspiration for a new kind of silverwork that could be identified as purely "Hopi". Until then Hopi silversmiths work resembled Navajo silverwork. The tradition involved cutting out layers of silver to solder down to a background and then tool and oxidize the revealed patterns which were taken from ancient, traditional pottery designs.
