Description:
An exquisite landscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "J.E. Hennah" and dating circa mid 20th Century. Framed - approx 16 X 21 inches (40.64 X 53.34cm).

This is an exquisite English Impressionist watercolour dating from the mid c20th period.
The landscape depicts an exquisite impressionist study of a "Clapper Bridge on Dartmoor". This primitive bridge, made up from 'stepping stones' spans the river or stream, a dense copse of trees in the background beneath a blue clouded sky. Beautifully painted in washes, the artist has captured the atmophere of this legendary West Country moor in a unique style. A 'clapper bridge' is an ancient form of bridge found on the moors of Devon (Dartmoor and Exmoor) and in other upland areas of the United Kingdom including Snowdonia and Anglesey. It is formed by large flat slabs of granite or schist supported on stone piers (across rivers), or resting on the banks of streams.
The work is signed "J.E. Hennah" lower left for "Joseph Edward Hennah".
Date:
The watercolour probably dates to around mid 20th Century.
