The motors have been thoroughly inspected and are in excellent working condition. We stand behind them for one year ā parts and labor. If these motors were new, the price of the motorized beach wheelchair would be at least $1,200 higher. In our rental experience, motors are more durable than any other component on the chair. HOW THE BPR MOTORIZED BEACH WHEELCHAIR EVOLVED
After 3 1/2 years in the motorized beach wheelchair rental business, Beach Power Rentals has learned a lot. Until we discovered that In the beginning, our beach wheelchair frames were made from steel. We used any type of motor and any type of controller and joystick configuration that would work for us. Needless to say, using steel for beach wheelchair frames was a mistake. Not only did the steel rust quickly, but it also made the beach wheelchair very heavy. We have been experimenting with aluminum for our frames. Initially, we made our frames using one-inch schedule 40 aluminum pipe and pipe fittings. This was a huge improvement over steel ā lighter weight and no rust.
As things progressed, we eventually bought a welder and Angelo, our technician, learned to weld schedule 40 aluminum pipe. This eliminated a lot of the costly aluminum fittings and made the beach wheelchair a lot stronger and much lighter.
We are now much pickier about the motors we use in our beach wheelchairs. In the past, most of our motors were 2 pole motors. We have replaced all of the 2 pole motors with 4 pole motors. Four pole motors have approximately 30% more power. In addition to that, we are using the Penny Giles Drive Technology VR2-90 controller and power module. These components greatly enhance the reliability of our chairs and narrow down diagnostic work tremendously.
In April of 2009 we used only Uā1 12 volt 35 amp SLA batteries. Wow, we have replaced all of those batteries with only MK 22 N 12 volt 55 amp SLA deep cycle batteries. Think of amps as gas in your tank. With a 55 amp battery you have a 57% increase in fuel supply = more time on the beach, and more fun between charges.
Speaking of charges...during the summer of 2011 we also installed new Guest Marine10 amp battery chargers. Previously our chairs were equipped with typical two or three amp wheelchair battery chargers, which required 8 hours for a full recharge. The new 10 amp marine battery chargers are not only waterproof, but they also cut charging time down to only 4 hours...again, more time on the beach and more fun.
