C1860 AMERICAN HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL PAINTING BY JB BRISTOL VIEW OF CATSKILL MTS

This listing is for an American 19th century Hudson River Valley landscape painting by John Bunyan Bristol.  The painting is oil on canvas, and is in its original frame.  It measures 29 by 40 ¾ inches or 73.5 by 103.5 cm.  The painting itself is stretch canvas and measures 18 by 30 inches or 46 by 76 cm.

The painting shows a vast and beautiful landscape. At the foreground is a river bank with a man sitting on the edge of his boat.  He faces the river and looks across the Catskill mountain range in the distance.  The painting is in its original heavy carved wood and gesso frame.  It has a deeply carved border scrolling acanthus leaves as its outside border decoration. It is signed on the lower right “J.B. BRISTOL”.

This is for John Bunyan Bristol (1826-1909), he was born near Hudson, New York and was primarily a self-taught artist.  John Bristol exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1858 to 1900, was elected an associate academician in 1860, and a member in 1875.  He also exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 where he was awarded a medal, at the Paris Exposition of 1889, where he won a prize, and at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901 where he also received a medal.  Although Bristol lived in New York City, he traveled and painted throughout New England almost every summer. Painters in Hudson were noted as landscape specialists.

The Hudson River School was a 19th century American art movement embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism and luminism. The paintings for which the movement is named depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, including the Catskill, Adirondack, and the White Mountains.

The painting is in very good condition; the canvas has not been relined and is all original.  There is age appropriate craquelure to the surface of the paint, but very stable.  The frame has some minor chipping to the gesso.  Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition of this fine landscape painting.
