Description: Original New Zealand Wars medal. Reverse dated 1863 to 1865. Named in engraved slanting capitals. 187 medals issued to H.M.S. Curacoa. The medal was only issued to survivors and the recipients had to have landed and engaged the enemy. The engraved lettering possibly indicates a late issue.

Purchased at Woolley & Wallis in July 2005.

Comes with research:

It appears that Navigating Sub Lieutenant H Grey joined the H.M.S. Curacoa on the 9th of June 1963 and transferred to the Falcon on the 18th of April 1964.

Comes with copies of a court martial. He was drunk and incapacitated on the ship the 'Kestral" on the 19th October 1875 & the 9th April 1876.

It states on his service record that he resigned to avoid court martial on the 5th of January 1877 - so he was probably caught incapacitated again.

A very interesting item.

Condition: Good. Shows minor wear. Darkly toned.

Size: 3.5cm diameter.
