This gauge is designed to measure Civil War "muzzle loader" bullets.  It will identify the caliber and manufacturer of the gun for which it was intended.

The gauge is a precision instrument that is laser cut to provide accuracy to within 1/1000th of an inch.

Civil War bullets are normally measured in decimals (not fractions).   For this reason, a length measuring gauge in 10ths of an inch is also provided.

A tolerance exists for the size bullet that can be shot for each caliber gun.  For example: The largest bullet a 58 caliber gun can shoot, has the diameter of .579 where as the smallest bullet it can shoot is .576, therefore the gauge (for 58 caliber) has holes laser cut at .579 and .576. Simply insert the bullet into the smallest hole in the gauge that it will fit, and read below the hole to determine gun caliber and manufacturer.

This gauge will accurately identify the caliber and manufacturer of the gun for which a bullet was made.

*** The material the gauge is made out of is plasticized rubber / poly-carbonate.   The materials used are by design and will not do any damage to your bullets or patina.  As long as the bullets are not "forced" into the holes, there will be no damage to the bullets, patina, or the gauge itself..
