February 27, 2016 marks the 150th Anniversary of the birth of sculptor, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, born in Everett (Chelsea, Malden), Massachusetts.
This new 2016 MacNeil Anniversary Medallion commemorates:
- The 100th Centenary year of first minting of the Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ) which he designed in 1916.
- The 150th Anniversary of the birth of the sculptor, Hermon Atkins MacNeil in 1866.
This 3 inch bronze medal is nickel-plated with red and blue accents.
- The face features MacNeil's 1916 quarter at its center. This striking "Miss Liberty" duplicates the inaugural minting of this classic coin from the US Mint.
- The "M" to the right of the 13th star beneath Lady Liberty is the only form of signature allowed for the sculptor.
- Tom LaMarre of Coin Magazine praised MacNeil’s design as follows:
“Rich in
symbolism and finely engraved detail, the new quarter reflected the
spirit of peace and preparedness just before the United States entered
World War I. It also revived a classical style in sharp contrast to the
abstract and modern trends that were sweeping the art world at that
time.”
