If you have stopped to look at this page, I know that you know that this is great piece of American computer history. This is a pen-operated tablet that was announced by IBM in April, 1992, but wasn't sold until October, 1992. It was originally called a model 2521 but was later renamed to 700T. This is definitely a 2521 as shown on the label: "Type 2521-001, S/N 23-AA037." Someone on the 'net told me that the AA037 means that it was the 23rd unit made and that it was bought in-house by an IBM employee. I can't confirm that, though.
The "001" designation in the Type means that it has 4 Meg of RAM. It has a 20 MHz 80386SX processor and a 10" LCD screen. The pen is missing but, as you can see in the pictures, it does come with two SanDisk memory cards. It does not come with a power supply. Here's what I got when I powered up:"IBM Thinkpad Post Version 1.21 8-21-92." After pressing the reset button, this is what was displayed: "Testing System 1782 Could not find Solid State Card (SSF) or media is bad. Insert media having system files." Obviously the display and power buttons are working. So are the contrast and brightness buttons. Beyond this, I have no idea. I listed this for parts because I can't test all the features. Cosmetically, there are some blemishes in the black enamel that need to be retouched if you are going to restore this. Thanks for stopping by and good luck. I hope this finds a great home. |
