Biography
Glen Vaudrey, the eldest son of farm labourers, was born into a dying farming community in Lancashire in the early 1970s. On leaving school he spent a decade travelling the more remote parts of Northern and Eastern Europe during which time he worked variously as a court usher; a hostel warden regularly cooking breakfast for 70; farmed snails; and at one low point was to be found cleaning public toilets (at least that job came with a pair of Marigold gloves). He now lives on the border of Cheshire where he revels in the title of a "natural mystic".
A completely self taught artist, as a young child Glen met a friend and one time model of the famed Wigan artist James Lawrence Isherwood; inspired to find out more he discovered Northern Art via Isherwood’s works, perhaps the true face of Northern Art.
While Vaudrey paints largely in the
EnglishImpressionistSchool of the North style he opts away from the dull browns and grays of Adolphe Valette and goes for a much brighter set of colours. Unlike the majority of NorthernSchool artists these days he fails to see the illusion of Lancashire pit towns being a modern day Elysium with happy folk trudging to pit or mill. Rather he sees that fabled time as being one of non stop work, poor safety conditions, chronic health, and rivers so polluted you could walk on the surface without fear of drowning. The grim reality comes through in his art but that isn’t to say his paintings aren’t also full of joyful vignettes and sardonic asides.
It’s hardly surprising that as an artist and an award winning author of mystery animal books (Mystery Animals of the Western Isles and Mystery Animals of the Northern Isles) that Glen paints cryptozoological creatures. Occasionally these paintings come up for sale and are much sought after. If you can’t find an original prints are going to be available in the near future.
Not all of Glen’s work is Northern Impressionism, he has also had some dark surrealism pieces displayed in galleries. When his work was exhibited at An Lanntair in Stornoway it was memorably described as ‘standing out for all the wrong reasons’ but that didn’t stop it selling.
Whichever painting of Glen Vaudrey’s you buy one thing is for certain - its going to be a talking point.
All that and he’s blooming good at it !
