eBay

Welcome to our auction! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls and toys, and lovely old china and glassware. For your consideration we present a wonderful, antique ABC alphabet plate made by Charles Allerton & Son, Staffordshire, England in the late 1800s.

This stoneware child’s plate features a red transfer illustration picturing a Native American chief atop his horse with other members of his tribe in the background. The scene depicts the chief in his regalia, including a magnificent headdress and carrying a long spear. Raised letters of the alphabet appear around the rim and the words “A Sioux Indian Chief” appear beneath the illustration.

This plate is marked C.A. & Sons England on the back, which indicates the maker was Charles Allerton & Sons – manufacturers of earthenware and china from 1859 to 1942.

We particularly love the red color used for the transfer and we think it is perhaps quite rare – in all of our years of collecting and loving antiques, we have seen this plate a couple of times in other colors, but this is the only time we have seen it in red!

The exact condition for this piece is as follows: there is some browning under the glaze that speaks to its very elderly age. We happen to love this patina and think it accentuates this early dish’s charm. There are NO chips or cracks but the glaze does have some minor surface crackling commensurate with its age. There is also some slight pitting of the glaze as well.

This is a magnificent, early example of a highly-desirable ABC plate with outstanding imagery. We think it would make a fabulous acquisition for the collector of antique tableware, items with Native American motifs, for horse lovers, or for collectors of childrens' ABC plates.
