Artist Biography:
George H. Holloway (Brit. 1882 - 1977) Born in 1882 and was elected an Entertaining Member (or Blue Feather) of the Bristol Savages in 1923. Little is known about him before this point except that he served in the First World War as a Staff Captain in the Royal Artillery, and that he was in business with the local printing firm of Holloway and Sons. At the time he became a Blue Feather he was already a well known entertainer. He was an elocutionist and specialised in monologues. He also made over a thousand broadcasts for the BBC, was a past member of the Bristol Playgoers` Society and a life member of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. In his business life was a past Chairman of the Bristol Master Printers` Association. In 1961 George was elected an Artist Member of the Savages. He was a talented painter, mainly in water colour. In the studio on a Wednesday evening he showed himself to be a fine figurative artist and was also particularly skilled at depicting horses. Whilst at the Annual Exhibition, to which he exhibited from 1962 to 1977, he concentrated on landscapes. In contrast to this he also produced some fine black and white illustrations that were published in the Bristol Illustrated News. George Holloway was made a Life Member in 1976 and died in 1977. | |
