The European Buff coat (so-called because of its yellowish color) was an item of leather clothing worn by both the infantry and cavalry during the 17th century, usually worn under armour.

It was derived from the simple leather jerkins worn by soldiers during the Tudor period eventually becoming a 3/4 length, close-fitting garment with long sleeves and a high collar to protect the neck and arms.

Typically, a buff coat was crafted from 3mm-thick suede cowhide and provided protection against swords, blunt trauma and possibly long range pistol balls, however as with all armour of the time it was ineffective against musket fire. As well as protecting the wearer from bad weather the buff coat became a highly desirable status symbol in the mid 17th century, making it the ancestor of the modern leather jacket.

See additional pictures for more details.

Our buff coat does not have buttons, it uses a leather thong fed through two holes. It is designed to be trimmed to length by you. The image shows the cord tucked in but would look better when trimmed

We don't need to copy information from any of our less knowledgeable competitors. At Medieval-Fightclub you can be assured that we tell it like it is - no bogus claims to secure a sale. Some sellers have some obscure stories about how thickness of steel in armour doesn't matter either historically or for your modern day combat needs. You can trust us and you only need to try us to find that out for yourself. With the best range, the best price, the most truthful & accurate advice -  you will never buy from anyone else again.

Combat ratings
Why do we feel a combat rating is important with armour? The short answer is because we know what we are talking about. Medieval Fightclub battle test all weaponry & armour that comes into our warehouse even when it clearly isn’t battle ready we feel it is important to be able to give you an honest view of each item. Please look in the description for the "Combat Readiness Score" & for a simple description of how combat ready our tests show that item to be. This score is given despite appearance and is purely about function. Please note all our scoring is out of 10, if you find a potential combat item that has not been scored, then let us know and we will give it a combat test & supply a score as soon as we can. This is the perfect guide for the period conscious re-enactor, you know what armour you need and we can provide you with the facts about it. Only Medieval-Fightclub has the ability to properly test our products and tell you the truth about them. Is it worth taking a risk on others who can’t offer you the same information? We stake our reputation on accurate advice because we know what we are talking about.

How do we rate helmets & armour?
The simple answer is that we try it out, we use and abuse it until it damages or we are satisfied with the result. It is because of this fact that we know exactly what we are talking about. It is not always about thickness (although it counts a lot) it is sometimes about the geometric design and how well it is constructed. Other factors which relate to combat readiness also play a part in our scoring system. For example - can it be worn immediately without modifications? If not, how many modifications will it take before you can safely wear it on the field or on stage?

What is the Gauge Debate about?
We understand your needs are based on the rules of your particular club, therefore we won’t assume to tell you that gauge is not important. In our combat rating system gauge does count towards a higher number but there is more to it than just thickness of steel. We also know that geometry and methods of construction play a large part in quality durable armour. You can trust our advice because we know what we are talking about when it comes to combat re-enactment. In our modern day combat sports can you afford to take a chance on armour supplied by someone who doesn't really know how armour works in re-enactment combat?

We offer DIY Maintenance guides
Yet another facet that sets us apart from other sellers. Our decades of experience as combat re-enactors mean that we have an in-depth understanding and have already produced DIY guides on the maintenance and repair of armour. This is something you won’t get anywhere else.  It can be a complicated subject to explain, however we have detailed written articles on this subject and many others. For more info, please ask.

Practical Armour Range
Almost all our armour range is usable and ready to go, some might be better with a little padding and some might work better with new straps fitted to other parts of your armour. Either way, we have the experience to offer you the best advice when fitting your armour.
