This tap will cut threads that are compatible with G 1/4 fittings (threaded portion of fitting must be <1/4").. The third to last picture shows an actual hole tapped with this tap.. The next two pictures show a G1/4 fitting threaded securely into that hole..
This is a straight tap (IE it's not tapered)...These taps will produce threads for low pressure applications and can be assembled with taper pipe threads (EG NPT). These general purpose taps are suitable for tapping most materials. The chips are retained in the flutes during use. Assembly of NPSI threads does not require sealants. Seal is attained by metal-to-metal contact. Nominal tap size is based upon the fitting size, not the actual size of the tap.
A: There are two main types of American Pipe threads:
NPT (National Pipe Tapered)
NPS (National Pipe Straight)
Both NPT and NPS have the same thread angle (60 degrees), shape, and pitch (threads per inch). NPSI is a sub category under NPS (NPSF is another)..
NPSI – Dryseal American Standard Intermediate – Internal threads are intended for use in hard or brittle materials for assembly with PTF-SAE short external threads but may also be assembled with full length NPTF external threads.
NPSF- Dryseal American Standard Fuel – Internal threads are intended for use in soft or ductile materials for assembly with NPTF external threads without using a sealer. Part may be gaged with an NPTF-L1 basic notch plug gage or with straight pipe GO or NOGO plug gages
PTF is identical to the NPTF thread except that one thread turn has been eliminated on the small end of the external thread. It can be used with the NPTF internal thread and also the NPSI internal thread. The NPSI is very similar to the NPSF but is designed for use in less resilient materials. The 'I' at the end stands for intermediate.
