This rare 1902 Van Briggle pottery poppy vase has a number of unique characteristics. Where it is similar to Design #21, the vase does not have the design number impressed on the bottom. According to Nelson’s A Collector’s Guide to Van Briggle, “Since most 1902 pieces have design numbers, any 1902 piece without a design number was almost certainly made early in that year.” The bottom markings include the Van Briggle logo, the words “VAN BRIGG—“ and the date “1902”. Marked in black are the Roman numerals “LXI” and “III”. Again quoting Nelson, “Experimental pieces were marked in black ink on the bottoms with two Roman numerals, one (I-V) which indicated the set, and another higher numeral (occasionally Arabic) which represented the new colorant. Few of the experimental glazes appear to have been placed in the regular glaze line, but many of the experimental color effects are exceptional.” This experimental glaze color is severely pitted or blistered (please use the “enlarge feature” of the picture gallery to better see pattern of blisters). Whether that was a result of an experiment in clay type, glaze formula, or oven parameters is unknown. In any event, this is a very unusual example of an early experimental piece. The vase is approximately 4" tall and 4" in diameter at its widest point. The pattern of nicely carved poppies surround the vase which has a matt army-green glaze color. Outside of the “blistering” there are no other noted defects such as chips, cracks or repairs.
