This is a great antique Knight Templars Sword in monumental style. An impressive Masonic Sword from circa 1880's with a classic silvered-brass patina to the mounts. The item is handsome as well as historic. This fabulous Sword was made iby the illustrious “Ames Sword Company”, one of the all time greatest Sword making firms alongside “M. C. Lilley & Co” , “The Pettibone Bros” and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia”. All reigning giants in the field of Masonic, Fraternal and Military Swords. As this Sword is well, well over 100 years old and considering age, it is in very good vintage condition with only some normal expected minor age wear here and there. The surface of the scabbard has light freckling from oxidation, but this is natural and does not disturb anything. There are some usual scuffs and scrapes on the grip (mostly backside), which is nothing of concern. The middle scabbard mount has a chip of red enamel missing from the cross. Overall, no serious problems. Only natural age. The Sword is beautiful. It is a phenomenal historic piece as far as American Knight Templarism goes. Design-wise, this Sword represents a vital part of the American Masonic experience. Below the Midnight Black Wooden Grip with its inserted Silver Cross there is the profiled PORTRAIT OF A CROWNED WARRIOR KING. His noble image is marvelously positioned against a background of Royal Arches that suggest a Castle. This is significant because it represents a direct lineage to the Monarchs who originally endorsed and supported the Crusades. Over the years, as far as we recall, Sword makers issued three different portraits of "Kings" on their Sword guards and less commonly seen, but also on scabbards. Because of strong similarities to historic illustrations and tradition, we believe the King's face with the mustache that often graces the guard of Templar Swords might well be Richard "The Lion Heart". But this King is different. His image is also scarcer. We have no idea if this Monarch was originally meant to be a generic reference to the Crusades or if he was intended to represent a specific historical figure. At each end of the Guard are Celtic style Maltese Crosses. These patterns are less frequently encountered on Templar Swords. But here they are. On the reverse side of the guard we have the Beauseant, the Battle Flag of the ancient Knights Templars. The Scabbard features elaborate Medieval compositions: SUITS OF ARMOUR, ANCIENT WEAPONRY and other bold imagery. The Blade is beautifully etched and engraved with Rococo style designs and is enhanced by a lovely golden wash. The original owner's name is there as is the name of the maker. The Sword is topped off by an impressive Medieval Knight's Head pommel. On each side of his helmet is the image of a mythological Gryphon. A fine item. In its Scabbard the Sword measures approximately 36 ¾ inches. Alone, the Sword is about 33 ¼ inches with the Blade about 26¼ inches.
