History
In collaboration with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), Bombardier engineers and industrial designers spent more than two years designing and testing the 2010 Olympic Torch. A fuel blend of propane and isobutane allows the torch to burn in colder temperatures than any other torch in Olympic history. A vent in the side of the torch allows the Olympic Flame to unfurl like a flag.

INSPIRATION
Bold, attractive and functional, the Bombardier-designed Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch is inspired by the long horizons, graceful snowdrifts and delicate shadows that form the contours of Canada’s unique winter landscape. The shape of the torch emulates the curved pathways that will be traced by the Torch Relay across Canada, and the lines carved by winter sport, be it skis through fresh powder or blades on ice. The torch design is fluid, organic and profoundly human.

The 2010 Olympic Torch was designed and manufactured by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc., a Canadian company founded in 1942 that stands as the largest supplier of rail equipment, systems and services, and the third largest manufacturer of civil aircraft in the world. Inspired by the contours of Canada’s winter landscape, the design of the 2010 Olympic Torch symbolizes the tracks created in snow and ice by winter sports. Each torch was manually inspected and signed off...

BUILDING 12,000 OLYMPIC TORCHES
Bombardier is producing one torch for each torchbearer who will participate in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. More than 12,000 torches are being manufactured by Bombardier in Canada. After the component parts are created, Bombardier employees perform the final assembly of each torch by hand. Expert assemblers control the correct fit of the components and inspect each torch before it is packaged and shipped to VANOC.
Recyclable materials are used as much as possible during manufacturing, including interior steel components and the torch’s exterior aluminum shell. In addition, the cylinders inside every torch will be recycled after their use. VANOC and Bombardier are committed to recycling any unused fuel from the 2010 Olympic Torches.
