Origin: Cameroon Grasslands (see ethnographical notes below) Size: approx 90cm in diameter and 20cm in width Medium: Palm grass weaving, feathers and fabric. Note: African Origins only sell the genuine Juju hat made by the Bamilieke people of northern Cameroon. We personally hand select each one to ensure they are plush, flat  and of the highest quality available.

All the way from the Cameroon grasslands, the striking Bamileke feather headdress is handmade by the Bamileke people of the region and traditionally worn by royal dancers during ceremonies held by the Chief as they symbolise prosperity, freedom and beauty.

Known in the west as Juju hats, the headdress is made of dyed chicken feathers hand stitched into a raffia basket, and ingeniously folds into itself for easy transportation from ceremony to ceremony – or to your front door! We love how intensely coloured these Bamileke headdresses are, and how their rotund organic shape adds an exotic far-flung glamour to even the smallest space.

They are truly remarkable, and ever-so eco, in that they promote fair trade, use only organic dyes, support indigenous lifestyles in Africa and utilise every part of a domestic product important in the every day food chain.

About African Origins

African Origins has been trading online since 2007. We are constantly on the look out for interesting objects to add to our collection. In the case of our African arts & crafts collection, we purchase using the principles of Fair Trade. We believe that Africa needs a hand up, not a hand out. We believe the role that trade plays in that process to be self evident. We do not deal in  any CITES listed animal product.
Our tribal collection is sourced from tribal dealers, auction houses and private collections the world over. Where possible, we will specify the provenance of important individual tribal objects.
