1.  THE REAL DEAL.... FIRST AMERCIAN EDITION / FIRST STATE, 1ST U.S.  APPEARANCE of "The STORY Of LITTLE BLACK SAMBO"!!

Published by Frederick Stokes, New York, by contract authority of Grant Richards of London in late 1900*.

The 1ST U.S. COMPANY TO publish BANNERMAN'S LITTLE BLACK SAMBO !

This is the Original Small Format, Dumpy Style, and the VERY FIRST EDITION in FIRST PRINTING/STATE** with Images of SAMBO on BOTH FRONT & REAR COVERS.

TRUE FIRST STATE as well, with lettering in light blue to match Sambo's pants** -- in Tan Buckram Cloth binder (Red cloth binder is third state -- later 1902 printing!)
 ________________________________________

    * FIRST STATE -- Printed on one side of the paper with each page of text facing a full page color illustration and with the preface explaining the Dumpy Book series. Per Yuill (p.3), "by 1900 Little Black Sambo had been published in the U.S. by Stokes. who had purchased the rights from Grant Richards. No remuneration went to Bannerman." *

Note:  There are no dates in  these Original American Black Sambo books, because Helen Bannerman had sold the Publishing rights to Sambo in England to Grant Richards, who promptly proceeded to not give her any royalties when the book took off in sales...so she refused to give her permission, as the author, to any copyright in the U.S. for Richards or Stokes!

It was never copyrighted in the States!

**According to Barton, The Pictus Orbis Sambo, pages 116-118, the first U.S. edition had the title and author lettering on the covers in pale blue, matching the color of Sambo's pants in the illustrations on the two boards.

The second issue (1901) has the title in black as only change.

& the third issue (1902/3) has a red cloth spine, as opposed to a tan buckram cloth spine in the first and second issues.**
