NO RESERVE! ORIGINAL ART 1955 LITTLE LULU COLORING BOOK PAGE BY IRVING TRIPP !!!!

Offered is a very nice original art for a coloring book page published in a LITTLE LULU coloring book by Western Publishing Company (Whitman) in 1955. This art is by IRVING TRIPP, who did almost ALL of the interior art for the LITTLE LULU comic books in the 1950s. JOHN STANLEY drew the covers and wrote the stories and provided the gags of which this is one. This art is almost like a classic 1950s Dell comic book cover. This page shows LITTLE LULU with her dog Flipper, who has proudly planted some bones in the garden.

The art image area measures 7-1/4" x 10" and was drawn with black ink on bristol board, in very good condition.

Tripp was an artist for Dell Comics in the ’40s and ’50s who teamed with Stanley. Stanley would write the Lulu stories in thumbnail fashion and Tripp would pencil, ink and sometimes letter. He also contributed covers — and worked until his retirement in the ’80s. While Tripp certainly drew in the style of Stanley, he contributed his own fine line — often just the angle of a line was enough to connote some shade of an emotion that took a panel from funny to hilarious — that was Tripp’s work.

Western Publishing Company (Whitman) had a virtual monopoly on any "Authorized" cartoon, comic, movie or TV character being published in coloring book, activity book or children's books from the 40s through the 60s. Any purchaser of such books were extremely fortunate because the artists used for these endeavors were top-flight animators, background artists or comic illustrators. Most of the artists had tie-ins to the characters they were drawing, i.e. Walter Lantz animators were used on the Woody Woodpecker/Andy Panda stuff, Warner Bros. animators on the Bugs and Porky stuff, etc. They were NOT in-house hacks. Here's your chance to buy at an AFFORDABLE price a representative piece of art of a character that you might have grown up with drawn by the artist who had worked on the comic book that you remembered from your childhood or as a younger collector of such material.

Concerning the rarity and quality of this artwork: The artwork in these listings is on about the same paper stock that many of their Dell comic book counterparts were on, as well as being drawn by many of the same artists. The Dell artwork from this period is very rare as most of it was tossed out and what is left by chance or by luck rarely hits the market. Most of this artwork is free of paste-overs and whiteout and the characters in most cases are larger than even on surviving cover artwork of the period.

International Buyers — Please Note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.

If you see a "Buy It Now" price and you are interested in this item, I suggest that you do one of two things: 1) Use "Buy It Now" and win instantly! -- or -- 2) Place a bid to erase the "Buy It Now" price (it disappears once a bid is placed). Otherwise someone else might use "Buy It Now" and you will not get a chance to win this item at all! "Buy It Now" will disappear with the first bid, so if you want to avoid a bidding war later -- use it now as it's a bargain.

We reserve the right to end this auction, revise the opening bid or "Buy It Now" price at any time if we find there is lack of interest, so please make sure to place your bids early!
