The Gibson L-37 model was introduced in 1935, with a 14 ¾” body, carved spruce soundboard, solid flat maple back, and red mahogany finish. By 1937, the color was changed to a chocolate brown, with a distinctive lateral sunburst on the sides, a rare variant seen only on a few depression-era Gibson instruments. A short lived model, the L-37 was discontinued altogether by 1941, just months after this particular instrument rolled off the line in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

It’s hard to find this model in any condition, much less as playable as this one is. This example would have to be one of the nicest L-37s around, with its original finish and mostly original hardware. It has survived many years in rather decent condition, despite its few cracks and typical minor checking.

Original hardware includes the three-per-side white button tuners – though they were replaced at one time – original frets, adjustable truss rod and adjustable compensated Brazilian rosewood bridge. We must not, however, that the bridge was glued to the top by a previous owner, but in a spot that affords near-perfect intonation of this wonderful acoustic. Please trust us when we tell you that the glued bridge has no bearing on the playability of this guitar.

The fingerboard has smooth low action over fine original frets, and a generous 1 3/4" nut with a gently rounded C profile neck. Tipping the scales at a scant 4 lbs., the guitar has a brilliant clear voice, with excellent projection.

Condition is VERY GOOD, and the wear of 70-plus years is evident. But the guitar possesses undeniable playability and great tonal qualities. There are several deep scratches on the top, all of which can be seen clearly in the photos below, and a few minor nicks and dings throughout. But strum this guitar and you realize the quality behind a truly vintage Gibson archtop acoustic.

We feel guitars like this are extremely undervalued in today's guitar market, and a great opportunity for both collectors and investors to pick up a very fine acoustic archtop from one of the world's premier guitar companies.

Also included is the original two-tone brown Gibson fiber case, which is fairly clean considering its age.
